Fresh Valley
Six Brabant greenhouses, one specialty: cucumber that snaps when you bite into it. Fresh Valley grows year-round on CO2 from the water authority and harvests for bite rather than shelf life.
The story
Who's behind it
Fresh Valley is not a single nursery but a collaboration of six modern glasshouse operations in North Brabant, including Tielemans Groentekwekerij and Mellantas. Together they grow on dozens of hectares under glass, with snack cucumbers as their specialty. The operations pool cultivation knowledge and sales and joined grower cooperative Kompany. Their stated goal: grow the snack cucumber market and supply year-round from their own greenhouses, close to the customer. For you that means a steady source instead of fluctuating imports, with a face and a grower behind every box.
What makes it genuinely different
Growing runs on waste streams. The CO2 released during water treatment by Waterschap De Dommel goes into the greenhouses and feeds the plants instead of the air. LED lighting keeps production going year-round, solar panels and energy recovery reduce consumption. Against pests they deploy natural enemies and bumblebees handle pollination, so chemistry barely gets a look in. A cucumber grows here in roughly two weeks from flower to harvest. That short, controlled cycle explains the bite: deep green, crispy and juicy, without the flat wateriness of fruit that's been days on the road. You taste the difference most distinctly raw, where a cucumber has nothing to hide.
How you stand out with this
For you, freshness and consistency count. Because it comes from North Brabant and runs year-round, you have short supply lines and minimal losses to transport, even in the depths of winter. The snack size is pure kitchen work: whole mini cucumbers you only need to wash and split, no cutting waste and no brown edges at the end of service. Set them raw where flavor has all the room, or give them a quick pickle or a flash on the heat. The crisp bite holds even if a plate has to wait. That's how you build a vegetable dish that runs on freshness and that you can set out consistently every week without any fuss.
Chef’s tip
Buy the mini snack by the tray and process it whole: wash, split lengthwise, lightly salt and let drain for ten minutes. You draw off moisture without losing the crispness. Perfect for a crudité or a fresh garnish that won't get soggy while the plate sits in the pass.
