Eminent
A grower who first designs the variety and then grows it. Kumato that colors chestnut brown and stays sweet, and a bell pepper that won the Superior Taste Award with the maximum three stars.
The story
Who stands behind it
Eminent is the brand of Farmhouse International and operates with two divisions. Eminent Seeds breeds its own tomato, bell pepper, and pepper varieties in Tholen. Eminent Food grows, sorts, and packs in Poeldijk. Together they have been doing this for more than twenty-five years. Eminent calls itself the only Dutch company that keeps the entire life cycle of its special tomatoes in-house, from seed to packed box. What lands on your plate is therefore not anonymous bulk but a variety they developed themselves and followed from start to finish.
What truly sets it apart
Most growers buy seeds and grow what the market asks for. Eminent reverses that order: first a variety with character, then the cultivation around it. The Kumato is the most famous example. A tomato that colors from yellowish-green to chestnut brown and tastes sweet with a slight sourness. Firm and juicy, and it stays whole when cut. Alongside the regular Kumato from Poeldijk is a mini variant with exactly the same profile.
With the bell peppers, their latest find is the Sweet Crunchino. Elongated and ribbed, averaging sixty grams, thin-walled but good shelf life. The seeds are so soft you barely notice them and the flavor is distinctly sweet. Currently available in orange, olive green, and brown, with red and yellow in development. The variety won the Superior Taste Award with the maximum three stars.
How to set yourself apart with this
Color on the plate without forcing anything. A plate with brown Kumato, yellow cluster tomato, and green unripe tomato reads as a tomato menu, not as garnish. The tomberries you finish per unit on fish or in an amuse, where precision matters. The Sweet Crunchino you work with both raw and grilled. Because of the thin wall, it cooks quickly and keeps its sweetness. And when a guest asks why that tomato costs more than standard cluster, you have a real answer: own breeding, Westland cultivation, and varieties you can name.
Chefβs tip
Serve the Kumato at room temperature, not cold from the fridge. At room temperature, the sweetness with the slight sourness really comes through. Lay brown, yellow, and green on one plate and you have contrast without adding an extra ingredient.
